Three new dog breeds will appear at the Westminster Kennel Club show in New York City next week.

The animals were entered in the 134th annual event that starts Monday at Madison Square Garden after being recognized as official breeds by the American Kennel Club.

The sleek Irish red and white setter is a high-energy dog but is gentle. The Pyrenean shepherd, native to France, has guarded sheep since medieval times. Hundreds lost their lives in World War I, searching for wounded men or as couriers.

The third breed - the Norwegian buhund that goes back to Viking times - is loyal and has a good work ethic. Its thick coat is either black or cream-colored.

The dogs are to be introduced at a Garden news conference Friday.
