Tornado numbers from the University of Alabama-Huntsville show that the year 2014 has already broken one national tornado record, and it is one we can actually be happy about.
Since 1950, the latest EF-3 (or F-3 on the old and no-longer-used Fugita scale) to form was on March 31, 2002. A week into April, and the record set in 2002 no longer stands. We have not had a single EF-3 tornado so far this year.
Of course, that could change depending on damage surveys from Monday night storms in North Carolina. With our without an EF-3 tornado confirmation, however, the record has still been broken.
