The Colorado School of Mines and the University of Colorado are among nearly 70 schools nationwide participating in basic research funded by the Defense Department.
The projects, announced last week, will be paid for with $227 million in grants. The Defense Department hasn't said how much each school will get.
Research topics include the interaction of sound waves and electromagnetic waves, future fuels for the Navy, laser transmission through media and ion transport through organic media. The School of Mines will be the lead institution on one project and a participating instution on three.
The University of Colorado will be a participating university on one project.
