1st West Nile death in Colorado this year

Weld County health officials say a 79-year-old woman has died from the West Nile Virus.

The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment said Wednesday that it is Colorado's first death related to the virus this year.

Health officials say the Weld County woman developed symptoms from the viral infection in August and was hospitalized. She died Sept. 7.

There have been 40 confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in Colorado this year. Eight of those were in Weld County.

Initial symptoms of the virus include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, weakness and rash.

West Nile is carried by mosquitoes.
