A 12-year-old boy has died from injuries sustained in a three vehicle crash that occurred Monday at the intersection of CO 85/87 and Plaza Boulevard in Fountain. State Patrol said he died overnight at a local hospital. As of Tuesday morning, another victim, a five-week-old girl, was in critical but stable condition.
State Patrol said a 2005 Dodge Ram was traveling southbound on Colorado 85/87 in the left lane, approaching Plaza Boulevard, while a 2004 Chevrolet Impala and a 2008 Toyota Tundra were stopped for a red light in the left lane of Colorado 85/87 at Plaza Boulevard.
The Dodge Ram struck the rear of the Chevrolet Impala, pushing the Chevrolet forward until its front end struck the rear of the Toyota Tundra. The Dodge and the Chevrolet came to rest on their wheels in the left lane, with the front of the Dodge embedded in the rear of the Chevrolet. The Toyota was pushed forward into the intersection, where it came to rest on its wheels.
The Dodge Ram's driver, 45-year-old Andrew Marsh of Colorado Springs, was wearing his seat belt and suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash. Marsh was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet, 24-year-old Daniela Gray-Maldonado of Colorado Springs, was wearing her seat belt and sustained minor injuries.
The front-seat passenger, 35-year-old Regina Steckler of Calhan, was also wearing her seat belt and sustained minor injuries. Four minor children occupied the rear seat. A 12-year-old boy and five-week-old girl sustained life-threatening injuries. The 12-year-old eventually died from his injuries at the hospital.
Two other children, a two-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, suffered minor injuries. All the occupants were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Toyota, 35-year-old Daniel Anthony of Fountain, was wearing his seat belt and sustained minor injuries. Anthony was treated and released from a local hospital. At this time, alcohol and/or drug use is being investigated as a contributing factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
