100,000 cancer deaths per year linked to obesity

Over 100,000 cancer deaths are directly linked to being overweight or obese, according to researchers at the American Institute for Cancer Research.

Experts there found over 30,000 breast cancers, and nearly half of endometrial cancers are caused by excess fat.

Cases of kidney, pancreas and colon cancer are also linked to too much weight.

Researchers say too much body fat triggers a series of hormonal changes. For example, obese women have more estrogen in their system, which is a known cause of breast cancer.

A separate survey found only 51 percent of Americans knew obesity can cause cancer -- a number far below what researchers hoped.
