Authorities say a skier is missing after an avalanche in the backcountry outside Aspen.

The Pitkin County Sheriff's Department says the avalanche struck near a popular backcountry hut at about 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities say seven other skiers in the group tried but failed to find the missing person. A 911 call got through at about 6 p.m., and Mountain Rescue Aspen sent several searchers to the scene.

The missing person's name hasn't been released. Authorities say everyone in the group was experienced in the backcountry.
