Elderly man hit by police officer dies

A 92-year old Pueblo man has died from injuries he received after being hit in a crosswalk by an on-duty police officer. William Wolford died on Sunday. He was struck by Ofc. Manuel Eurioste on Jerry Murphy Rd. on September 11.

According to a police report, Wolford was walking south on Bonforte Blvd. at the Jerry Murphy intersection. The report says Wolford lawfully entered the crosswalk. Meanwhile, Ofc. Eurioste was stopped at a red light in his patrol car. The report states the officer didn't see Wolford as he made a right hand turn and struck him.

Intially Ofc. Eurioste was ticketed with careless driving causing bodily injury, however since Wolford has died the charge has changed to careless driving resulting in death. The case has been sent to the Pueblo District Attorney's office for review.

According to Deputy Chief Troy Davenport, Ofc. Eurioste was not put on administrative leave. Davenport says appropriate personnel action is being considered.
