Latest Update Wetmore fire grows, snow on the way

10/24/2012 01:49 PM by Lauren Molenburg

The Wetmore fire has now affected an area up to 2200 acres, damaging up to 14 homes while remaining at zero percent containment. Over 160 firefighters and air support are working to create a containment line.

386 people remain evacuated from the surrounding area.

The Custer County Sheriff's Office believe a sparking power line, pulled down from the hurricane-like winds started the fire in the early afternoon on October 23.

Winds are considerably slower than yesterday, blowing from the south and southwest at about 13 miles per hour. The temperatures are also about 15 degrees cooler right now, however, both wind speeds and temperatures are expected to rise throughout the day.

The weather is then expected to take a turn on Thursday into Friday. Temperatures are supposed to drop and snow could be seen on the front range and in the fire area.

Officer Matthew Tyner was honored and remembered Tuesday at his funeral service. The officer with the Colorado Springs Police Motorcycle Enforcement Unit was killed last week in an accident while on duty.

Several speakers referred to one of Tyner's favorite sayings: "Don't be afraid of dying, be afraid of not living." He was just 42 when he died, but tributes made it clear he lived his life to the fullest.

"He was a great cop, he was smart, he was safe he was a guy that I liked," said colleague and friend Officer Matt Singels. Part of his tribute was admitting that at first he said no to speaking at the service. "I realized I wouldn't be able to do Matt's life justice." In the end he stepped up to honor his friend and offer a tribute to the guy with a "big smile."

Police Chief Pete Carey told about an officer who dedicated to helping people. There was a woman he pulled over, ticketed, and then learned it was here birthday. "He asked if he could sing Happy Birthday, and he did. It made her day," said Carey.

There were hundreds of officers who traveled from agencies across Colorado to attend the funeral and honor a fellow officer. There were also officers who came from Kansas City. Tyner worked there for three years before joining the Colorado Springs Police Department. Chief Carey said he was looking at what is called the "thin blue line." He says it is an understanding among law enforcement. Speaking to the officers in attendance Carey said, "Know your presence speaks volumes to us and Matt's family."

Tyner is remembered as an officer who loved the serving the community and also loved life. He enjoyed life's adventures even more if he got to do things with friends. His friends say a part of Matt will always remain with them. "We're never going to forget you," said Singels

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - A makeshift memorial has been set up for a Colorado Springs police officer who died after his motorcycle collided with a vehicle.

Flowers, teddy bears, and American flags are being left beside a highway in memory of fallen officer Matt Tyner.

Police say Tyner was conducting traffic enforcement at the time of the crash Tuesday afternoon. Other circumstances of the crash are still under investigation.

Tyner joined the Colorado Springs Police Department in 1999 and served as a patrol officer, neighborhood resource officer and training academy instructor before becoming part of the motorcycle unit.

Bystanders frantically rushed to try to save mortally-wounded CSPD officer

07/25/2012 12:19 AM by Zach Thaxton

A small group of bystanders were the first to rush to the aid of Colorado Springs police officer Matt Tyner after his motorcycle slammed broadside into a pickup truck on Austin Bluffs Parkway Tuesday afternoon. Dan Mercado says he was at a nearby garden center when he heard the crash right around 2:30 p.m. He and another friend, also named Dan, rushed to find Officer Tyner's motorcycle essentially impaled into the side of the pickup. Officer Tyner was unconscious, pinned between the motorcycle and the pickup, he says.

Mercado and a couple of other bystanders managed to free Officer Tyner from the wreckage and lay him on the pavement. It was obvious, Mercado says, that Officer Tyner had suffered multiple major wounds and was bleeding severely. Mercado says he retrieved some scissors or landscaping shears from the garden center staff to help cut Officer Tyner's helmet off, with instructions coming on the phone via dispatchers. They successfully got his helmet off and stabilized Tyner's head and neck until emergency personnel arrived within minutes, but by that point the wounded officer had stopped breathing and his pulse was almost gone, Mercado says.

Mercado says he saw Officer Tyner's lights flashing just before the crash happened. Colorado Springs Police have not released any details about the crash, including whether Officer Tyner was in pursuit of another vehicle. Mercado says the driver of the pickup, an apparently elderly man, seemed shocked and dazed after the crash. CSPD have not said what, if any charges might be filed against the driver, who remains unidentified.

Mercado is no stranger to tragedies involving officers. He lives just a block away from the spot where Colorado Springs Police Officer Jared Jensen was shot and killed in early 2006. He says he hurts for Tyner's fellow officers -- Mercado's brother is a former CSPD officer now working for Monument Police. He also says his efforts were in no way heroic. He was just doing what any other compassionate citizen would do, he says.
