Dougherty brother caught with contraband, moved to Pueblo

The eldest sibling of the Dougherty gang, known for a nationwide manhunt that ended in Southern Colorado, could be facing new charges. The Huerfano County Sheriff says Dylan Dougherty was found with contraband in his cell during a routine sweep of the jail. The Sheriff won't say what was found or how Dougherty got it, but says it could mean new charges. Dougherty has since been moved to Pueblo County where he can be kept segregated from other inmates, he'll likely stay in Pueblo until his trial in Colorado is finished.

Dylan Dougherty and his siblings, Lee Grace and Ryan were arrested near Walsenburg last August after leading authorities on a high speed chase on I-25. The trio is also accused of shooting at authorities here in Colorado and of various other crimes in Florida, Georgia and Utah.

New court hearing set for Dougherty siblings

08/15/2011 06:34 PM by David Ortiviz

Two of the fugitives from Florida who were captured in Colorado were back in court today in Pueblo. Both brothers were in court...but their sister, was a no show. The 29-year old was scheduled to be in court with brothers Dylan and Ryan, but never showed up.

We went to the Pueblo District Attorney's office for answers. District Attorney Bill Theibaut didn't know why lee grace wasn't in court, but he says he'd look into it.

The Doughertys are facing attempted murder and assault charges in Pueblo County, but their advisement hearing was continued until Aug. 29--that's the deadline for Theibaut to file formal charges.

We also learned today, Ryan Dougherty is seeking medical attention. Ryan made an unsuccessful getaway last Wednesday when the suspects crashed near Walsenburg after a high speed chase on I-25.

Ryan's attorney claims his client may have suffered a concussion and says he's hasn't received proper medical attention at the jail. We called the Pueblo County Sheriff to ask about that and Lee grace's absence in court, but we're still waiting for a response.

Some questions may go unanswered. A judge has issued a gag order, which means lawyers and law enforcement aren't allowed to talk about details of the case that aren't a matter of public record.

The suspects are also facing attempted murder and assault charges in Huerfano County. They're scheduled to make a court appearance there on Monday.

Dylan and Ryan Dougherty made a brief court appearance in Pueblo this morning. The suspects along with their sister Lee Grace are facing attempted murder and assault charges in both Pueblo and Huerfano Counties. However, Lee Grace was not in court today, and we still don't have an explanation as to why.

The Dougherty's case was continued until Aug. 29. The suspects still have not been formally advised of their charges in Pueblo County.

They're next court hearing is on Monday in Huerfano County. Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk Taylor says the suspects fired shots at pursuing officers during a high-speed interstate chase through Pueblo and Huerfano Counties last Wednesday.

The Doughtery siblings also face charges in Georgia and Florida.

Dramatic 911 calls from Dougherty chase

08/12/2011 09:22 PM by Nicole Vandeputte

There are new details tonight in the capture of the Dougherty gang. We're hearing for the first time those dramatic 911 calls in the final moments of that chase.

The trio also faces new charges tonight. The Huerfano County District Attorney filed charges of attempted murder and assault on a peace officer against Lee Grace, Dylan, and Ryan Dougherty.

On Friday, officers were back at the scene of that crash looking for more evidence.

According to court papers, Huerfano County Sheriff's Deputies joined the chase near Colorado City on Wednesday. They say the trio started shooting at the deputies.

When the Doughtrys' finally crashed, deputies say Lee Grace grabbed a machine gun and ran. She came face to face with Walsenburg Police Chief James Chamberlain. He says she pointed the gun at him, and tried to shoot. It didn't work. That's when he shot her in the thigh.

At the same time, Ryan was running toward George's Restaurant in Walsenburg. In the 911 calls, he sounds like a man desperate for a place to hide. KDVR obtained these 911 tapes.
Caller: He's right at the back door...don't let him in guys...lock the doors...He's coming right to George's...at the back...he's at the back door of George's...

That's when some construction workers started chasing Ryan. David Vucetich, and Shane Zubinsky. It was Shane who stayed on the phone with dispatchers.

Shane: I got him!
Dispatcher: Still don't make contact with him...don't make contact with him.
Shane: He's heading south again going to pizza hut.

Shane and David caught Ryan. They held him until officers arrived. They got a well deserved thank you for their help.

Shane: Alright, the officer has him in custody now.
Dispatcher: Alright, the officer has him in custody. Now shane, I am going to let you go...Thank you for all your help.

The Dougherty siblings are expected to appear in court again on Monday in Pueblo.

Walsenburg mayor Bruce Quintana says he's glad the Dougherty trio was captured and arrested in his city. Citizens track down one Dougherty brother and hold him

08/10/2011 07:52 PM by Greg Boyce

When customers at George's Diner in Walsenburg heard gunfire, they knew there was trouble. The restaurant went on lock down, but Prep Cook Richard Ringen was locked outside.

He came face to face with one of the Dougherty brothers as he tried to get away from officers.

"I looked at him and I pointed at him and said 'You're him', and his eyeballs got so big I thought they were going to pop out of his head," said Ringen.

Ringen and a couple of other men gave chase, a courageous move since they didn't know if he had a gun.

They captured him and held him until officers arrived.

"I was mainly just worried about him armed, but yet I wanted him captured, because I knew he was bad, dirty, you know." said Ringen.
