Cases of West Nile Virus are increasing in California and health officials are blaming an unlikely culprit-- abandoned homes with swimming pools. The standing water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which spread the virus. Health departments are trying to track which homes are empty and treat the pools to kill mosquito larvae.
West Nile is now an endemic problem--it comes back every year. Last year, 3600 cases were reported across the country, half with encephalitis or meningitis.
