You don't have to be a professional painter to get professional results these days.
Engineering director, Stacy Genovese says, "painting is a great, easy way to make over any room of your house. so here at the institute we looked at some new formulas of paint to see which ones were worth using."
The Michelangelo Faux Finish lets novice painters create textured walls with a single coat of paint. It costs $45. "First you have to prime your walls and let that dry overnight and then you apply this new Michelangelo paint, wait about a minute, and its color changing technology will actually change colors with pressure and movements," says, Genovese.
Bella and Birch designer wall finish is good if you prefer wall patterns, the Good Housekeeping Research Institute suggests the Bell and Birch designer wall finish. For a 12' by 12' room it costs $77. "This is a great product because you can do pieces of your room at a time and not worry about wet paint and clean-up in between. You also don't have to worry about matching up seams like you do with wallpaper. The seams blend in to each other. So even though i didn't line it up perfectly, it will all be blended when i'm done," says Genovese.
The Benjamin Moor Aura paint lets you skip the priming step if you want to go from a dark color to a light one. It costs $55. "We started with a wall painted with navy blue aura paint. Then we put a coat of white aura over it with no primer. You can see there is some navy still coming through. Finally, we put a second coat of aura white paint on top of the navy and you can see there is no navy coming through at all and this was done with no primer," says Genovese.
