Are you looking for a little something extra for your italian meal? The Good Housekeeping Institute puts some Marinara sauces to the test.
Taste coordinator, Samantha Seneviratne says, "a basic marinara sauce is tomatoes, basil, garlic, and onions. We decided to do a taste test of jarred marinara sauces. We found 20 nationally available brands, and we had our volunteers looking for good texture, flavor and color."
Rao's Homemade Marinara isn't a cheap choice by it was voted 1st in the taste tests. It costs $9.00 for a 24 ounce bottle. "Rao's is made of imported italian tomatoes, imported olive oil, basil, onions, all really fresh ingredients," says Seneviratne. A tester of the sauce says, "it had a really rich tomato flavor and i could definitely get a little bit of the herbs and the olive oil, but nothing was too strong. Nothing was too overpowering for me."
Colavita's All Natural sauce really had a fresh taste to it, one tester says, "the thing i really liked about it is that the tomatoes actually tasted like fresh tomatoes." It came in 2nd place and costs about $4.89 for a 26 ounce jar.
