Are you prepared if there's an emergency in your home? The Good Housekeeping Institute has some ways to protect your home.
Engineer, Todd Kent suggests, the Kidde Wireless smoke detector. He says, "having a smoke detector on each floor simply isn't enough. You should have one in every room, especially the bedrooms. One great product is the kidde wireless smoke detector, where if one goes off, say downstairs, it sets off all of the alarms in your house, warning you in your bedroom at night to get out of the house. It's very important to frequently clean your smoke detector. Simply take it down off the ceiling and use some compressed air to lightly blow around the smoke detector. Check the batteries and then reinstall it and make sure you test it so its working." This smoke detector costs $50.
Hot bath or shower water is a major cause of scalding accidents. The president of Home Safety Council, Meri-K Appy says, "hot liquid can burn like fire. It's especially dangerous for little ones and older people because their skin is thinner. There's some simple things you can do to protect your family from a scald burn. You can install anti-scald devices in your bathtub's spout and showerhead that will shut the water off to a trickle if the water reaches a dangerously high temperature." The H2Ostop hot stop is a good choice. Good Housekeeping recommends hot stop. It installs easily without special tools or plumbing expertise, and Good Housekeeping says the Moen Grab Bar can help avoid falls in the tub or shower. The Hotstop costs $25 and the Moen Securemount Grab Bar costs between $20.00-$30.00.
Cleaning products director, Carolyn Forte says, "this moen grab bar is particularly unique because its easy to install and with its secure mount system, doesn't need to be attached to a stud."
