A lot of kids are wearing those bright, colorful clog shoes called "crocs." But The Good Housekeeping Research Institute has some safety concerns.
Miriam Arond says, "at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute we became concerned when we learned of reports of children becoming injured while riding escalators and wearing crocs or flip flops. So we decided to look into it, and to see what parents can do about choosing footwear for their children that will be safe."
Emma Hochberg of Westchester, New York, says she was severely injured when her Croc was sucked into an airport escalator. "When the resin material from which Crocs is created makes contact with the side of an escalator, the foot will get sucked into the mechanism of the escalator and take the child's foot with it," says Hochberg's lawyer.
Textiles Director, Kathleen Huddy says, "these types of shoes can put kids at risk because they're really only to be used for the beach or the pool. When you're going to places such as ball games and amusement parks they should really be wearing close-toed shoes."
With summer just around the corner, Good Housekeeping suggests some shoes that kids will like and are safe to wear. They recommend the L.L Bean Explorer Sandals, The Lands' End Beach Trekker shoes and the L.L Bean Keen Sandals. "These are a wonderful pair of shoes from Keen. It has adjustable laces that can be tightened. It has a velcro strap so that the arch area can be tightened, and its closed in the back. We also love the Beach Trekker shoes by Lands' End. They have the covered toe, the back is supportive and they have a really good tread. Another shoe that we like especially for the little ones is the Explorer Sandal from L.L. Bean. Its got a really good tread so that the little ones won't get hurt," says Huddy. The Keen sandals costs $50. The Beach Trekkers sandals and the Explorer sandals both cost $29.50.
