Look inside a woman's makeup case, and chances are, you'll find some beauty products gone bad, but how do you know when it's time to toss your makeup? Some women just can't say goodbye to their makeup-no matter how old it is.
Beauty Editor says Alyssa Hertzig says, "we love our makeup. We don't want to get rid of it. But the problem is beauty products do actually go bad. Mascara can dry up; powders can get kind of cakey; foundations, nail polishes both can separate. The FDA does not actually provide expiration dates for most cosmetics. so its really up to the woman herself to know when things are expiring and when she really needs to get rid of them."
So let's take a walk through the beauty aisles, mascara? Robyn Hatcher says, "the tube of mascara can be a breeding ground for bacteria. So we recommend replacing your mascara every three months. Also, after three months, mascara becomes a non-performer. It becomes dry and cakey and it doesn't go on evenly any more."
2 years lipsticks and lip gloss? Good Housekeeping says they have a shelf life of two year and face makeup? "I recommend replacing your liquid foundation every 6 months. You see what people don't realize is that every time you put your finger our your brush into the foundation it really introduces bacteria, which can sometimes lead to irritation or skin breakouts. Now if you're using a pressed powder foundation, that has a longer life. That can go about two years without needing to be replaced," says Hatcher.
Keep cosmetics out of the bathroom since heat and humidity promote the growth of mold and yeast. and if you need a visual reminder on when to toss your makeup, good housekeeping recommends timestrip-stickers that tell you when a cosmetic was first opened.
