Plenty of choices in new video releases

A trio of Oscar winning actors combine for a dark comedy based on real events. "Charlie Wilson’s War" is one of the new DVD releases this week. In it, Tom Hanks plays a larger than life Texas Congressman and Phillip Seymour Hoffman a CIA agent in the fact based comedy "Charlie Wilson’s War." It's about the duo's efforts, along with those of a Texas socialite played by Julia Roberts, to help Afghanistan get secret money and technology to fend off the approach of the Soviets in the 1980's. Extras include a feature on the real Charlie Wilson. The film is rated R.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s second DVD release of the week pairs him with Laura Linney in the dark comedy "The Savages." They play estranged siblings who fly across country to assist their ailing father as he moves into an assisted living center. Old wounds and issues resurface as the trio reunites. Interviews with the stars are among the extras. The film is rated R.
The giant creature feature gets a 21st century spin in the thriller "Cloverfield." This one's from the creator of TV’s "Lost," JJ Abrams. It's part "Godzilla," part "Blair Witch Project," with the entire story being told through the lens of a home video camera. There's also very little music. The film is rated PG-13.
But it is the equivalent of a death sentence in the thriller "One Missed Call." In this one, people wind up getting phone messages from themselves in the future, warning of their impending deaths. When these prophecies wind up coming true, it flips everyone out, including Edward burns. "One Missed Call" is rated PG-13.
A woman fears her young son's been abducted by ghosts from her past in the thriller "The Orphanage." This one's in Spanish with subtitles from director Guillermo
Del Toroa family's plans to renovate a rundown old orphanage run into trouble when former residents, including one particular one, start revealing themselves. The film's rated R.
