Good for your skin and the environment

Finding good skin care products is a priority for a lot of women. Now it's possible to care for your skin and the environment at the same time.

At the Mod Skin Labs home office in East Granby, Connecticut, the company's founder, Raffaele Ruberto demonstrates his products. Ruberto spent a decade in New York City doing product development and formulation for a major cosmetic company. But two years ago, he came back to Connecticut with an idea to start his own company to provide quality skin care products and products friendly to the environment.

Product packaging is minimal and the face care line is made up of all natural and organic materials. Ruberto said, "I think green is no longer something out west and California. I think here in ct we're really proud to have the partnership that we do."

Mod Skin products are sold in boutiques and in Whole Foods stores. The name of the company comes from the idea of modesty. "Luxury comes from modesty. We're seeing a trend in the beauty industry that less is more," said Ruberto. It's an idea that Ruberto first shared with colleagues in New York.

Ruberto said, "Everybody that I had asked and talked to about my idea, it can't happen. You can't have a green company, a green organic company and try to source everything locally."

But a year after the launch of Mod Skin, Ruberto is continuing to produce a green product that relies on absolutely no overseas outsourcing.

"We've proven we can do it and it's a personal victory for me," said Ruberto.
