More investors putting money into green companies

There is a growing trend among investors to consider companies' environmental impact when choosing whether to invest.

Noel Haras said becoming a father changed his world forever.  His new children changed the way he looked at his portfolio, too. Haras said he started working with a financial advisor 19 months ago, when his twins were born.

Paul Shuman, is Haras' financial advisor. He helps his clients explore the world of investing in green. "If you look at long term, I think the writing is on the wall. We are moving away from the oil economy," Shuman said.

The financial advisor said investors are moving toward renewable resources like solar, wind and geothermal power. But before you start throwing greenbacks toward green companies, Shuman said you should do your research. "As with any emerging technology, you don't want to put all your money into it," Shuman said.

Experts advise green investors to look for pooled investment vehicles like mutual funds, and they warn against trendy individual companies. "It's an efficiency play. If the company is efficient, it will end in good business," Shuman said. Experts say buying into green companies is investing in the future of the planet.

The new father agreed. "I realized it was something I had to do for myself and everyone else and for my twins," Haras said.
