Brazil has launched a plan to preserve the Amazon rainforest.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced a plan aimed at tapping the natural resources of the rainforest. Lula met with governors of the seven states that make up the rainforest area to discuss a series of economic measures and the creation of new conservation units.
The sustainable Amazon plan has been discussed since 2003. It includes strategies for the generation of new jobs in the region which is home to 23 million Brazilians. The president gave very few details about the program itself, but said it would help incorporate the Amazon to the rest of the country.
