Pueblo County Sheriff Deputies are searching for human remains just west of city limits, after a dog discovered a human jaw bone in the area. Investigators aren't sure who the victim is, but they say the bone doesn't appear to be old.
Wednesday morning, sheriff deputies and police officers started their search for more bones near the 4100 block of Goodnight Ave. Investigators say that's where the bone was found. "There was a human jaw bone found by a dog in this neighborhood," said Lt. Laurie Leach, spokesperson for the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office.
On December 29th, the dog found the bone and took it home to his master. The coroner later identified it as a human jaw bone. Investigators don't know how it got to the area, or who the victim is--they can't even say yet if the bone belongs to a man or a woman. However, Lt. Leach says the bone doesn't appear to be old--giving them reason to believe the victim may have died recently. "We are looking at missing persons, it could be somebody local, it cold also be a transient, somebody homeless, somebody going through, so yes we are looking at missing persons," said Lt. Leach.
Police brought in a small airplane to search from the sky. Deputies say they'll bring in search dogs on Thursday if they can't find anything beforehand.
Meanwhile, medical examiners plan to study the jaw bone closer to see if they can figure out who it came from.
