The scales aren't as fancy and the drama is not so "dramatic," but for the teachers and staff at Canon City High School, creating their own version of NBC’s "The Biggest Loser" has been a success.
"It's real people on the video instead of the perfect model type figure on every other video that you have,” says physical education teacher Kristi Elliott who started the weight loss program back in January.
The group of 39 teachers, secretaries and administrators meets every Thursday before school to weigh in. Together they have lost a combined weight of 248.8 pounds.
Elliott says the positive energy generated by their success is affecting the rest of the school. “They're getting out, they're exercising and they just feel better and they come to work with a better attitude," Elliott said.
This week, the teachers are also getting their blood pressure checked thanks to some help form the Fremont County Nurse Association. Nurse Laurie Wertzbaugher says the teachers are setting a good example for the rest of the community.
"We are excited she's doing this and we hope it is a pilot program for other surrounding schools that they will see what she is doing and get on board with it," Wertzbaugher said.
So far, McKinley Elementary in has joined the high school in creating a weight loss program for the teachers there. Elliott hopes weight loss bug will catch on at other Canon City schools as well.
