Thousands of acres near the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area will be off limits to humans to protect wildlife, including the threatened sage grouse, and prevent
soil erosion.
The 17,570 acres on parts of the Black Ridge and Fruitland mesas, west of the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness, will be closed to hiking, horseback, skiing, and motorized activity through April 30.
Bureau of Land Management officials, who manage the land, fear snow and poor conditions on other nearby public lands could drive people to the area being closed.
