The clock's ticking for completion by Memorial Day as another phase of major construction gets underway in downtown Manitou Springs. “There’s a lot of excitement,” according to Mayor Eric Drummond.
This is the fourth of a five phase project. The idea is preserving things that make Manitou unique while adding improvements. Elements of the project include putting overhead power lines underground and widening sidewalks to create a more walking oriented community.
Earlier phases show there are benefits after putting up with a big mess. Referring to business owners and visitors the Mayor said, "I think they're loving it and I think one of the signs is that maybe we had such a wonderful increase in sales tax revenue over 2007 compared to prior years."
This is a multi-year, phased plan so work can be done after the holidays, and before the busy summer tourist season. That gives workers about five months to finish some big projects.
