Long time Walsenburg resident, Margaret Williams, doesn't get too riled up these days.  She was shocked, though, when she opened her January utility bill.  Williams says, "I couldn't believe it, I thought that it was a mistake."

The charges for natural gas more than tripled from the month before.  She says, "December it was $145.00, in January it was $433.00, so that’s quite an increase."

Williams' water, sewer, gas and electricity totaled $487.00 for the month of January and she says the 3-hundred percent increase from the month before came without warning.  "Explain the bill; explain why this happened and what reason it was that it went up so high."

It turns out; Margaret isn't the only one looking for answers.  Traci Vallejos says, "It was double what we normally pay."  The spike in utilities hit the entire town of WalsenburgVallejos says her family couldn't afford to pay the entire bill. "We just paid half."

According to the city of Walsenburg, there are two explanations; the first, they say, was out of their hands.  City Councilman Larry Patrick says, "We had an unusually cold winter and we've had a number of days where we've had winds over 50 to 60 miles per hour."  The second reason, according to Patrick, is new billing software and meter reading equipment.  "That caused our meter reads to be over a six to seven week period as opposed to a normal four week period."

To even things out, Patrick says the city will shorten this month's billing cycle to get back on track.
