Baby Kayla loses fight against cancer; Foundation created in her honor

A Colorado Springs baby named Kayla, who's captured the hearts of people around the world, died from cancer on Sunday.  Her family hopes her life can help other children and families in the fight against childhood cancer with the Kayla Weber Believe Foundation.

Kayla’s mother, Julie Weber, says Kayla "passed at 2:53 a.m. on Sunday.  And our world was changed forever."  Her 15-month-old had unforgettable blue eyes and bright smile.  Kayla was battling Neuroblastoma, the most common type of infant tumor, for 11 months.  Now, Weber says Kayla’s " helping me see what I can do for her, even in heaven."

Today, Weber packed a pink teddy bear, a bottle, and bracelet, just a few of baby Kayla’s favorite things, to lay in her in her casket.  Weber claims everyone who knew this courageous child was simply touched by her spirit, even in the worst of situations.  She says she remembers Kayla "waving to the patients.  Blowing kisses to the nurses.  Making everyone laugh.  Laughing at herself.  She was just hilarious.  And I said, Kayla, why did god bless me with you?  Why did he choose me?  I’m so lucky to be your mother."

In her grief, Weber says "After Kayla’s passing I don't want any more to die.  And the reality is that more will.  I just hope we can do something about it, as soon as possible."  So she’s creating the Kayla Weber Believe Foundation to raise money in the fight against childhood cancer.  "We’re asking everyone to fly a golden balloon tomorrow.  Write a message on it, and send it to heaven.  And let her know that we'll never forget her.  And we'll honor her and her name everyday."  So the legacy of Kayla’s short life can live on forever.

Kayla Weber’s funeral will be tomorrow at the woodmen valley chapel at 3:00 p.m.  The public is invited to attend.  To visit the Kayla Weber believe foundation go to www.myspace.com/babykaylaweber2
