The Army is asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit that seeks to prevent plans to triple a Fort Carson training site.

The Army made the appeal Tuesday. The lawsuit was filed by an opposition group known as "Not 1 More Acre!" Opponents of the Pinon Canyon expansion say it will hurt ranchers and the economy by taking land out of agriculture. The Army says it needs to expand to train more soldiers on new weapons and tactics. The plan calls for tripling the size of the site to about 1,000 square miles in southeast Colorado.

The lawsuit was filed April 23.
