Rodeo season is underway in Colorado Springs. On Wednesday morning, the Pikes Peak Range Riders left for their five day journey on horseback to the towns and cities of the region inviting people to the 2008 Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo. But before those cowboys left, they filled up at a hearty street breakfast courtesy of FortCarson’s 43rd Area Support Group.
The soldiers served up their signature scrambled eggs and pancakes to hungry a crowd downtown Wednesday morning as part of the 48th Annual Sertoma Street Breakfast. Proceeds from the breakfast and the rodeo benefit military charity organizations in Southern Colorado.
As part of the activities, two dozen FortCarson soldiers re-enlisted during a ceremony following breakfast.
"I'll tell you, this is encouraging for the nation and for our army, to see these 24 young Americans stand up and say, during a time of war, we're staying,"
This is the 60th anniversary of the Pikes Peak Range Riders. The group was formed in the 1940’s to promote the rodeo and to keep the city’s western heritage alive. One hundred and seventy range riders are taking part in this year's ride to the mountain communities of WoodlandPark, Cripple Creek and Victor.
The riders will return to Colorado Springs on Sunday after four nights of camping. Then, they will hop in the saddle again to ride down Tejon Street in the Rodeo Parade Tuesday evening.
The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Runs from July 9-13 at the NorrisPenroseEventsCenter, 1045 W. Rio Grande Street.
