There are long range plans to have every student who attends public school in Pueblo to wear a uniform. Pueblo City Schools emphasizes there are no plans to adopt this policy soon, but it's definitely being talked about.
Currently only some schools in Pueblo require students to wear a uniform, but one day that may change. "There is an action step that addresses a uniform policy," said Casey Mahon, a spokesperson for Pueblo City Schools.
There are more than a hundred action steps outlined in the district's strategic plan to improve education. On page 66 is where you'll find the one on implementing a district wide uniform policy. It doesn't say when, but the subject has certainly come up in the past. "I do know at the high school level, I've been involved in at least two conversations with the high school, either site based committee or parents group as far as talking about uniforms and the feasibility of that," said Dan Comden, a school board member.
The district emphasizes there's no deadline for adopting this plan. Also, district leaders are still undecided about whether this would simply result in a stricter dress code policy or actually require pre-schoolers to seniors to wear standarized uniforms. "Is it part of the strategic plan? Yes. But those discussions haven't taken place yet," said Mahon.
They have talked about the potential benefits of all student wearing uniforms. "It does help put the focus on learning. we aren't competing to see who can wear the latest, the best, the nicest," said Comden. But they also know a bold plan like this, will likely create some resistance.
The school district is adopting the international baccalaureate program at three schools and the students involved will have to wear uniforms. But everywhere else, the decision will continue to be made at each school.
