Couple assaulted and robbed outside Pueblo bar
David Ortiviz
A couple in Pueblo claims they were assaulted and robbed outside a bar, right around closing time. The couple was injured and shaken up. Unfortunately, police say these sort of crimes aren't uncommon.
The husband and wife, who wanted to remain anonymous, went out to a bar in downtown Pueblo on March 14 for drinks and fun, but went home with bruises and scars.
It happened on Central Plaza in the heart of downtown Pueblo. The couple claims they were coming out of a bar, when a group of men and women attacked them.
"We were assaulted from behind. Next thing I knew I was on the ground. I couldn't see him. All I could see was boots. I was getting kicked by anywhere from six to eight people," said the woman.
Her husband walked away with mostly scrapes and bruises, but she suffered a fractured wrist. "It was just completely out of the blue. It was just a random attack," she said.
They say their random attackers also stole close to $400 from them. The couple doesn't think this was an isolated crime. "People that we've talked to in the past few weeks, we've heard of a couple of stories that this has happened to other people," the man said.
"We don't even realize that we're in jeopardy of being assaulted by random perpetrators and that the cops aren't really doing anything about it to get them off the streets," the woman said.
Police say they're actively searching for suspects.
Officers know what happened to the couple, is an ongoing problem. Officers say brawls, fights and attacks are happening near bars, mostly on weekends near closing time. "When we're faced with a situation like that we usually do step up our patrol in our area and we do have cars in the vicinity of that bar," said Pueblo Deputy Police Chief John Ercul.
Officers say the best thing patrons can do is to constantly be aware of their surroundings, to try to avoid becoming a victim.
The victims in this case say they're frustrated that officers haven't done more to help them, and solve the case faster. But when we talked to police this afternoon, they told us they've arranged for the victims to come identify potential suspects in a photo line up on Friday.
