Automated meter reading helping the environment
Bea Karnes
An initiative by Colorado Springs Utilities is paying off in several ways, including helping the environment. Meter readers aren't burning gas to get to neighborhoods, and they're not kicking-up dust from dirt roads in remote areas. It can also help consumers, by giving them a daily read out of usage, helping them to reduce energy use and control bills.
The Automated Meter Reading project is ahead of schedule. More than 293,000 AMR meters have already been installed. Springs Utilities installs about 500 pieces of AMR equipment each day. It's projected to hold down utility costs in the future because meter reader salaries can be eliminated, along with the vehicles they use. It also cuts down on liability because meter readers are no longer subjected to vicious dogs.
Springs Utilities is owned by the City of Colorado Springs.
