Favorable weather and soil conditions are allowing fire managers of the US Forest Service, Comanche National Grassland, to begin their spring prescribed burning projects Tuesday morning. Two separate prescribed fires are planned -- the Windmill project, 547 acres near county roads M and 20 -- and the Galleta project, 562 acres near county roads M and 17, both in Baca County.
If conditions continue to be favorable, fire personnel will continue on Wednesday with the Brown Reservoir project, 1,338 acres in Otero County, seven miles west of Timpas.
Key objectives of the prescribed burns are to enhance grassland health and reduce hazardous fuel accumulations on allotments and pastures. Smoke will be visible during burning operations.
