Allegations of racism and discrimination at another school district
Ryan Wilson
A parent's claiming there's racism happening in Widefield School District-3. This comes on the heels of yesterday's news conference, where some parents made similar claims about the Falcon School District.
The school district says it prides itself on being diverse and accepting but the people making these claims, say the district has been biased and unresponsive.
At their son's basketball game today, the Wingo family said all six of their children have been harassed by either students, teachers, or administrators, in incidents that span about 5-years. Allegations include verbal and physical abuse. After talking to principals, the school board, the governor, and even Colorado's U.S. Senator, they feel that nothing has been done to correct the situation.
"I think it's something that, if one person stops and looks at it and takes action then other people will stop and look and take action and then maybe something can be accomplished," parent Felicia Wingo said.
Wingo hopes the attention brought to the alleged problems at Falcon schools will bring some attention to the issues that she claims are in District-3. The school district sent News First this statement. Here it is in its entirety:
"For several years, the district has investigated and sought to resolve all issues brought by one parent, and the district continues to work with the parent in order to provide the best possible education for her children.
More importantly, our community is fiercely proud of and celebrates the tremendous diversity that comprises Widefield School District 3. This diversity has resulted in a richer educational experience for all our students. Over the past 50-plus years,Widefield has earned a reputation for establishing a culture of acceptance, tolerance and high expectations for students of all backgrounds, and Widefield will continue to build on that strong foundation in the years to come."
