Free testing kits to detect radon in your home are available in Pueblo County. The kits were purchased by the Pueblo City-County Health Department and must be picked up in person. There are 100 kits remaining.
Radon is a problem throughout Colorado, produced by the breakdown of granite. It seeps out of the ground, into homes. The gas is radioactive, and could damage your health. "Radon kicks-out your cancer suppression gene. It doesn't give you cancer, it makes you more susceptible to developing it," said Jenny Kedward, environmental coordinator for the health department.
Once the free kits are gone, the department will distribute coupons for discounts on radon kits. The coupons can be used at local home centers.
Residents of other communities should contact their county health department for coupons.
