Ice water rescue at the Broadmoor lake

The weather Friday set the scene for a water rescue at the Broadmoor lake. It was set up by Colorado Springs firefighters, but it was intended to give emergency room workers a glimpse of what happens on the scene.
You may remember, last December, incredible home video of a man falling into the ice at Seven Falls. He was working about 100 feet up, when he fell. Two co-workers walked across the ice, and pulled him out with a rope. He was hurt, but survived.
There was no life or death here at the Broadmoor on Friday, but the scene was similar. A firefighter pulls a rope across the freezing waters of the Broadmoor lake. He pulls out a fellow firefighter, who pretends to fall through ice.
This heroic show plays for a large audience. A trauma symposium was held at the Broadmoor. It brought together emergency workers from across the state. Roger Nagy, MD, is the assistant trauma medical director for Penrose-St. Francis Hospital. He says, "We have first responders, emergency personnel. We have nursing, and physicians."
At the water rescue, trauma workers get a view of crisis that they don't see in the emergency room. Lt. Aaron McConnellogue is with heavy rescue for the Colorado Springs fire department. He says, "The hospital needs to see how the pre-hospital handles a patient, and what goes into a rescue, and different things we're actually doing." Nagy agrees, saying, "I think theres a huge value for me as a trauma surgeon to see what these guys go through, when they're on scene. The decisions they have to make. The situations they deal with."
