Doctors are hopeful that a Fort Carson soldier can fully recover from a training accident last week that left him with a crushed spinal cord. He's paralyzed from the chest down but has full use of his arms.
Pvt. Cody Becker, 19, is listed in serious condition at a Denver hospital following the first of at least two surgeries to stabilize his spine. Surgeons say the spinal cord was swollen but not cut, so there's a chance he can recover. He told his hometown newspaper, Kenosha News, he's confident he'll walk again. Becker and his wife have a 3-year-old daughter.
Becker was hurt when the armored vehicle he was riding in tumbled down a hill at the mountain post. Three other soldiers were also injured. Fort Carson spokeswoman Dee McNutt says the accident is under investigation.
