Colorado Springs water rates to soar
Bea Karnes
Get ready to get soaked by your water bill. Residential water rates in Colorado Springs will rise 126 percent in the next few years to pay for the Southern Delivery System, a water pipeline from the Pueblo Reservoir. In Security the increase will be 171 percent, while Fountain will see a 63 percent hike.
Those numbers come from a Bureau of Reclamation study. The entire cost of the Southern Delivery System is estimated at $1.1 billion. Currently, Colorado Springs has water rights stored in the Pueblo Reservoir, but has no way to get the water to Colorado Springs. SDS is expected to meet water needs in the Springs through 2046.
