Amorous animals cause baby boom at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

In case you haven't noticed, there are a lot of new faces at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. In the past fourteen months there have been four giraffes, four lion cubs, a baby gorilla, a baby monkey, and a baby orangutan born here.  Another giraffe calf and a baby Siamang Gibbon monkey are due this spring.

"It just kind of happens,” said a baffled zoo spokesperson Sean Anglum. “It isn't like we really plan it and go circle on the calendar and say ‘this is when the baby boom's going to be, it just kind of happens that way."

Among the amorous animals at the zoo, the giraffes are by far the most romantic.  Since they were first introduced at the zoo in the 1954, there have been 190 giraffes born here.  That’s more than any other zoo in the world.

Anglum insists the zookeepers don’t play soft music in the animal stalls or serve meals by candlelight. In fact, no one has really come up with a good reason that the mountain-side animal retreat such a hotbed for romance.

"We've had lots of folks come up and do different academic studies,” Anglum said. “They haven't come to any conclusions."

The love bug isn't just biting the animals, either. In fact, a few months ago a couple got engaged while riding on the carousel. Their wedding will take place at the zoo at the end of the month.
