When the High Plains Unitarian Universalist Church purchased the former Mountasia amusement park and video arcade they were stuck wondering what to do with the golf course. There was talk of creating a meditation garden or perhaps a landscaping project. But interest from the public, outside of the church body, steered them in the direction of keeping the course open.
The church’s youth group now operates Academy Miniature Golf as a fundraiser for local charities. The teens spent weeks scrubbing and cleaning the fountains and course holes to bring it up to par and then opened for business.
On Tuesday morning, the teens proudly presented Care and Share Food Bank with a check for $1,501 which they raised renting putter and golf balls to public during the month of July.
"I was just telling the kids, (the check) will actually turn into an entire truckload of food coming into the food bank," said Care and Share president Nicholas Saccaro, who was on hand to accept the donation.
The church wants plans to expand their mini-golf outreach program to help other charities in the community. The golf course is open from 11:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from noon until 9:00 p.m. on Sundays.
