Air Force reactivates an historic squadron

The United States Air Force reactivated the 380th Squadron at a ceremony in Colorado Springs Saturday.
The 380th Squadron will now be named the 380th Space Control Squadron. 40 years ago the squadron stood down, after seeing some historic battles. The group flew bomber missions over Japan during WWII, some of the airmen later were remembered as the Doolittle Raiders.
Now the mission is more technical. "It's a bit of satellite communications, a bit of electronic warfare, a little bit of orbital analysis," said Lt. Col. Michael Assid, who is in charge of the squadron. "The bottom line is we monitor satellite communications signals for interference deliberate or otherwise."
About 130 people will work in the 380th Space Control Squadron, which will be headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base. However, their mission will have them deployed all over the world.
