Technology has put the power of broadcasting in the hands of anyone with a video camera and a computer. Video sharing websites like YouTube have allowed amateur film makers and videographers to broadcast their work to the online world.

Many school districts have added video production courses in recent years as equipment prices have dropped. However, developing that technology into a set of teachable skills is the challenge facing educators today.

At Palmer High School, teacher Neil Poese says his video production classes have been in high demand since the program started almost a decade ago. His goal is to give students the proper foundation in film making techniques so that they can best apply themselves in college and the workplace.

"The trick is to give them the tools that are available now, but then teach them the fundamentals and the critical skills that are necessary in film making and cinematography so that they can rise the cut above," Poese said.

Poese says the critical thinking element that's involved in his lessons have helped students in other courses as well.

"As a former English teacher, what I find, is I'm able to teach basic critical thinking skills and communication skills very effectively here in the video production field," Poese said.

At Coronado High School, instructor Dan Hoff says the growing popularity of video sharing websites have helped fueled the interest in his classes.

"I think with YouTube coming along and its popularity has kind of pushed the kids into this, they've become very interested in it and it's become a very strong curricular activity," Hoff said.

Palmer students produce programs for Terror TV which is broadcast both over the school’s TV monitors, and on District 11’s cable access Channel 16.
