Colorado was among the five fastest-growing states from July 1, 2007 to this July.
Estimates released Monday by the U.S. Census Bureau show Colorado, Texas and North Carolina each grew at 2 percent. Utah was the fastest-growing state with a growth rate of 2.5 percent and Arizona was second with 2.3 percent.
Colorado's population increased by 96,686, giving it the eighth-largest gain in the country. The state's estimated population was 4.9 million on July 1, compared with 4.8 million in July 2007.
The West was the fastest-growing region (1.4 percent) between 2007 and 2008. The South added the highest number of people (1.4 million).
