Focus on the Family plans to lay off or reassign 46 employees next year when it changes the way it ships books, CDs and DVDs. Spokeswoman Lisa Anderson tells News First that the reassignment of workers will begin in late October and continue through the end of the year.

Christian Book Distributors of Peabody, Mass., will take over distribution efforts, cutting costs by more than half. Focus has been shipping fewer products as more people buy them through online retailers and big stores like Wal-Mart.

Focus, based in Colorado Springs, has about 1,200 employees. In September 2007, it laid off 30 people and reassigned 15 others to new jobs.
