Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the Pentagon has to focus on the task at hand rather than spend too much time on what he calls "Next War-itis." In a speech to journalists at a seminar in Colorado Springs, Gates says his goals are to meet the needs of troops now taking part in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. That includes taking care of them properly when they return home from the front.
The defense secretary admits that the Army is at a point that it "would be hard pressed to launch a major conventional ground operation elsewhere in the world." Gates adds that such a scenario is unlikely, and that if it would occur, there is ample air and naval power to defeat "any adversary who commits an act of aggression."
