Many teachers in Pueblo City Schools were upset Friday when they got letters which said they must sign a contract in 14 days or their job would be considered vacant.
The letter, said Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Dr. Doug Wilson, could have been worded better. The district, he explained, just wanted to get an idea before the school year ends, how many teachers plan to come back next year. It included a cover letter, and a one page contract which said, "Your current salary rate may be adjusted in accordance with any change in the salary schedule that may be approved by the Board of Education, which salary schedule the Board of Education reserves the right to change from time to time."
Some teachers took that to mean their salary could be reduced by the School Board. Teacher salaries are covered by a separate employment agreement, which expires at the end of August. Negotiations on a new agreement have already begun according to Carol Partin of the Pueblo Education Association.
Partin told News First she was urging teachers not to sign anything until she gets some legal counsel.
