One of the stars at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is sick. Zookeepers say Maggie, the 34-year-old hippo, is battling a hip problem that's led to major weight loss.
They suspect she also has kidney failure. The staff is treating her with antibiotics, but says there's not much more they can do at this point.
"The plans for the short-term is to make her life as comfortable as possible," said Sean Anglum, spokesperson for the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. "If it gets to the point that it's not comfortable than we'll probably have to euthanize her but that's a determination down the road."
Maggie, the matriarch, lives with two of her granddaughters. The average lifespan of a hippo is 35 to 40 years.
