"Flat" is the new "up", according to retailers, when it comes to sales from last year to this year.
The owner of Toy Station at School Crossing, Sherrie Antes, says she hopes for level sales this Christmas, and the store is off to a good start, thanks to great deals and an email blast to customers.
"We were very pleasantly surprised. We had a great weekend. Last year, it wasn't really that strong," Antes said.
Antes says last year, she didn't try to compete with the big box stores. But this year, she gave customers more of what they wanted - deals. Toy Station had $80 kitchen sets for $30, which sold quickly.
"It does seem people are shopping the promotion and not as much in between as they used to," Antes said.
Antes says she hopes people come for the deals, and for the toys that open the mind.
"Because if they just have to imitate a character, they are not being creative or anything," Antes explained.
In the meantime, Antes and her staff will think up the next great promotion to get people to shop now, and have them come back long after Christmas is over.
