Health officials in Pueblo confirm plague in a rabbit found on the north side of Pueblo West.
Plague is a bacterial disease that can be transmitted by rodents and their fleas. Those fleas can transmit the disease to humans and animals. The Pueblo City-County Health Department says humans can be exposed to plague through cats which are highly susceptible to the disease.
Health officials recommend that you protect your pets form plague by using flea powder. You should also take steps to prevent rodent infestations around your home and stay away from wild rodents. You shouldn't touch sick or dead animals and see a doctor if you have symptoms of plague, including a high fever and swollen lymph nodes. If your pet has a high fever or an open sore they could have plague and you should take them to a vet.
