Police are searching for suspects in a murder near Canon City. Kayakers found James Durgan's body in the Arkansas River last Saturday. Police say he was shot to death, and have ruled it a homicide.
Durgan went missing July 11th, when he didn't come home from a business trip. He made a stop in Canon City on the 10th, to rent a motel room, but when he missed a dental appointment, his wife reported him missing.
Four days later, on July 15th, his car was found on a pullout on Highway 50, just east of Chaffee County. And another four days later, kayakers found his body, near the "Spikebuck" section of the river. Durgan was identified by dental records and after an autopsy, police said he was shot to death. Now, it's got some residents scared that this kind of thing could happen.
"It is kind of scary, being a single female in this area, I drive around by myself all the time, so it is kind of scary that you might not be safe in your own vehicle doing what you need to do in this area," Canon City resident Laura Sanders said.
"Everybody around where we live are real nice people, It's bizarre that it would even happen. I can't believe it," George Huffman said, another Canon City.
Police have interviewed several people in Salida, and searched a couple cars but so far, no word on any arrests. If you have any information on this case, call Fremont County Crime Stoppers, at 275-7867.
