British investigators say a jet that crash-landed at Heathrow airport Thursday was about two miles away from the runway when its engines failed to respond to demands for more thrust. Officials say they're going to use flight recorder information to try to figure out what caused the engine problem on the British Airways Boeing 777.
A safety investigator at a private company says a fuel shortage and the possibility that the plane hit a bird will be among the potential causes that will be examined. A team from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board will be helping in the investigation.
The jet made a crunching touchdown short of the runway, ripping off the plane's landing gear and severely damaging two engines and both wings. Nineteen people suffered minor injuries. The crumpled plane is still on the runway. More than 53 flights from Heathrow were canceled Friday morning because of the disruption caused by the accident.
